In ancient times, what we know as turnovers today were called portable pies. In 1964, Kellogg’s introduced the American public to Pop Tarts, which became an iconic version of the portable pies of centuries before.
A year later, Poppin’ Fresh, better known as the Pillsbury Dough Boy, made his debut. Also in the mid-sixties, Pillsbury introduced their version of the apple turnover. I was instantly hooked, becoming enamored later when the cherry and blueberry flavors were added to the mix.

“A turnover is a sort of small, typically individual pie or pasty, in which the filling is placed on one side of a piece of rolled-out pastry and the other side is then turned over’ to cover it, forming a semicircular shape. The term is first recorded at the end of the eighteenth century: an old woman preparing her turnovers, commonly called apple-pies’ (Sporting Magazine, 1798).

Somewhere along the line (perhaps in the 2000’s), the turnover disappeared, replaced with the ultra-popular Pillsbury Crescent Roll, this time filled with the same filling used in the original turnovers, and iced as well.
Just this morning (Sunday), I popped open a box of cherry-filled Crescents, rolled them together and then slid the cookie sheet into the oven for a short time before enjoying two of them (at 140 calories each, that was plenty).

Not surprisingly though, every time I put them together, I think how much easier it was to put a blob of cherry filling on the turnover’s square and flip it over vs. the crescent roll’s long triangle shape being rolled up without losing a bit of the filling.
With that thought in mind, “This…or That?” this week will unscientifically determine whether we “roll over” for crescents or turn instead to the turnover when we’re making our 21st century “portable pie”!

While you consider your decision, watch a few videos that look back at commercials from the past featuring both delicious options:
