Song Spotlight: “Calculated Risk”

As I continue counting down to the release of Vertigo on October 30, I wanted to take a closer look at one of the album’s unreleased tracks.

Today, that song is Calculated Risk.

Of all the songs on the record, this one may come closest to capturing the central idea behind Vertigo itself.

Because at its core, Calculated Risk asks a simple question:

What are you willing to risk for something you truly believe in?

The Odds

Life would be much easier if every decision came with a guarantee.

Every relationship would work out.

Every dream would succeed.

Every leap of faith would be rewarded.

Unfortunately, that’s not how life works.

Most of the decisions that matter come with uncertainty attached.

And that’s where Calculated Risk begins.

The song explores the moment where logic and emotion collide. When you’ve run the numbers. You’ve considered the consequences. You’ve heard the warnings.

But your heart keeps moving in a different direction.

Sometimes the safest choice isn’t the one you can live with.

Love as a Gamble

Throughout the song, love is presented through the language of chance.

Bets.

Roulette wheels.

Odds.

Winning.

Losing.

The possibility of walking away with everything.

Or nothing.

But the song isn’t really about gambling.

It’s about vulnerability.

Every meaningful relationship requires trust. Every act of trust carries risk. The bigger the reward, the greater the possibility of getting hurt.

That’s what makes the decision meaningful.

The Turning Point

One of my favorite moments in the song comes near the end.

The narrator spends most of the track weighing possibilities, questioning outcomes, and wondering whether the risk is worth taking.

Then something changes.

The focus shifts away from fear.

The uncertainty remains, but the perspective changes.

Instead of asking whether the risk is worth it, the narrator realizes that some opportunities are too important to avoid simply because they might not work out.

That’s where the song’s message truly lives.

A Lyric From the Song

“The risk becomes the reason, not the thing I try to dodge…”

That single line captures the heart of Calculated Risk. Sometimes the possibility of getting hurt isn’t enough to stop us from pursuing something meaningful. Sometimes the very uncertainty we’re trying to avoid is what makes the journey worthwhile.

Why It Matters To Vertigo

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I’ve come to realize that Vertigo is an album about perspective.

Each song explores a different moment when the ground shifts beneath your feet.

Sometimes that shift comes through love.

Sometimes through memory.

Sometimes through loss.

Sometimes through self-discovery.

In Calculated Risk, that shift comes through choice.

The realization that uncertainty isn’t always something to avoid.

Sometimes it’s something to embrace.

Because without risk, there is no growth.

Without vulnerability, there is no connection.

Without uncertainty, there is no adventure.

A Personal Reflection

I think most of us can look back on our lives and identify moments that felt like calculated risks.

Changing careers.

Moving somewhere new.

Starting a creative project.

Sharing something personal.

Trusting someone.

Following an instinct when logic suggested otherwise.

Some worked out.

Some didn’t.

But those moments often become the turning points that shape who we eventually become.

That’s one reason this song resonates with me.

It’s not just about romance.

It’s about having the courage to step forward when certainty isn’t available.
