Thus far, our video reactions have been to songs mostly from the 70’s or earlier (with the exception of the Timbaland/One Republic collaboration on “Apologize”). Today we venture into the 90’s with a song called “Man in the Box” by Seattle-based band Alice in Chains.
Most commonly associated with the grunge movement of the early 90’s, the band merges heavy metal and alternative elements into a melodic and catchy composition here, further highlighted with lead singer Lyne Staley’s distinctive throaty vocals.
But what is the song about?
…what it’s basically about is, is how government and media control the public’s perception of events in the world or whatever, and they build you into a box by feeding it to you in your home, ya know. And it’s just about breaking out of that box and looking outside of that box that has been built for you.

One thing I found most interesting in the song was the use of what I later learned is called “talk box”, which is a nearly vocal “wah-wah” guitar effect. As I note in my reaction video, it took me instantly to another huge hit that utilizes the same effect, that being “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi.
Considered by many to be AIC’s signature song, the 1991 single peaked at #18 on Billboard’s Album Rock Tracks Chart, and later garnered a Grammy nomination for “Best Hard Rock Performance” in 1992.
As of the end of 2019, Nielsen Music reported “Man in the Box” was the second most-played track on mainstream rock radio for the entire decade. Wow, how did I miss that?
