A choice that is truly as old as time. To illustrate, the people of New Guinea are believed to be the first to domesticate sugar cane around 8,000 BC, while during the Middle Ages, salt was so expensive it was often referred to as “white gold”.
Here are some fascinating facts about salt (a mineral) and sugar (an organic compound):
- The only craving humans are born with…is sugar
- Wars have been fought over salt (Venice vs. Genoa, as well during the American Revolution)
- Lemons have more sugar than strawberries
- Only 6% of the total global salt production is used for human consumption
- A 20 oz Coke has the same amount of sugar as 5 Little Debbie Swiss Rolls
- Because Romans were given money to purchase salt, the Latin word for “salary” was coined
- The scientists who discovered Sucralose (Splenda) were trying to make insecticide
- “Glitter” is 1950’s prison slang for salt
- The average American consumes 53 gallons of soft drinks per year
