Led Zeppelin. Queen. Deep Purple. These were the bands I listened to. I still listen to them.

My older brother’s taste in music has been a major influence on me lately, especially when I’m considering classic songs to react to. His love for legendary artists and bands like the Beach Boys, Neil Diamond, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and the British group Deep Purple has left a lasting impression on me.
TODAY’S MOTEVENTUROUS REACTION
Deep Purple is most commonly linked to their #4 Hot 100 hit single “Smoke on the Water,” which remains one of Deep Purple’s most iconic songs, known for its distinctive guitar riff and memorable lyrics. The track continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, serving as a cornerstone of the band’s legacy. The narrative behind the song adds a compelling layer to its popularity, as it captures a real-life event and transforms it into a timeless rock anthem. The lasting impact of “Smoke on the Water” is a testament to the enduring power of music to immortalize significant moments in history.
Recently however, when searching for a classic track for Moteventure Reactions that I’d never heard before, the song “Highway Star” from Deep Purple’s 1972 “Machine Head” album (the same one that features “Smoke on the Water”) surfaced online. After considering various potential hits, I decided to delve into this lesser-known track, eager to explore its depths.
TRENDING IN ’72
Let’s take a look at the music that was making waves in mid-September of 1972. Here are the top 5 singles from the Billboard Hot 100 chart at the time.

Deep Purple is an English band that was formed in London in 1967. The band is widely regarded as part of the “Unholy Trinity” of British hard rock and heavy metal alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Initially conceptualized as a super group named Roundabout, the band experienced a revolving door of members before finalizing its first line-up after trying out numerous musicians and vocalists, including Rod Stewart.
During a tour of Denmark and Sweden, still known as Roundabout, founding member Ritchie Blackmore put forward a new name – Deep Purple. He derived the name from his grandmother’s cherished song, “Deep Purple” by Peter DeRose. The rest, as they say…is history.
Beginning with their first single, “Hush” in 1968 through “Portable Door” in 2024, Deep Purple has released 55 singles, 22 studio albums and 43 live albums to date. In total, they have sold over 100 million albums, solidifying their position as one of the best-selling artists of all time.
Deep Purple was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

“HIGHWAY STAR” is a classic rock track by the legendary band Deep Purple. The song is known for its iconic guitar riffs and powerful vocals, making it a timeless favorite among rock enthusiasts. It was released as part of their sixth studio album in September of 1972, marking an important milestone in the band’s career.
Blackmore’s use of blues scales and phrasing with dominant minor scales and ideas from European classical music when he’s composing and playing have resulted in some of his best work.
