What’s the most fun way to exercise?

Fitness and exercise have been a topic I’ve covered a number of times on the blog, including the links I’m including below to name a few:

The biggest trick for me is finding something that keeps me motivated and keeps me stretching to meet my fitness goals. Chief among my methods of finding (or simply chasing) success is making exercise a fun…uh…well, exercise in my daily routine.

How do I find the fun in a workout? Here are some options to consider:

MAKE IT A GAME

A number of years ago, I attended a “boot camp” style gym that literally made each workout unpredictable, challenging, and most importantly, FUN.

Whether we played dodge ball, Family Feud, the “Murph’s Challenge” or even “Stations of the Cross” at Easter, the coaches in that program motivated every one of us to do more than what we could do on our own. The camaraderie with the others attending the camp left me personally looking forward to each day’s workout. Good friends…and better fitness…bullseye!

YOUR WHY

If you go through the motions, and don’t consciously think about what your goal is and why you want to pursue it, you most likely won’t succeed. Think of it like the proverbial boat on the water, waves coming and going with a bit of force as you’re attempting to steer safely to the shore, which is tantalizingly close to you. Just one problem. You are navigating without oars.

That’s what fitness without a goal is like. Know your why and you will succeed…every time.

DON’T GO IT ALONE

In the wise words of Dionne Warwick (and friends), when it comes to keeping fitness fun, that’s what friends are for. Keeping in shape is way more fun if you are side by side with someone who challenges you, laughs with you, even backslides with you. They keep you accountable and lift you up when you are ready to hang it up.

TREAT YOURSELF!

Where’s the fun in trudging day by day through a work out with no reward or incentive to make all those reps and sets worth it? Pat yourself on the back with a romantic weekend with your love, a special purchase of something you’ve wanted forever, or even something simple like a latte with full flavor! Just make sure the reward is one you have to work to earn.

LISTEN TO THE MUSIC

Funny how once you have airpods stuck in, no one can hear the music that inspires you. I don’t care whether you’re into AC/DC or DC Talk, Doobie Brothers or Jonas Brothers, Teddy Pendergrass or Teddy Swims, chances are if you have tunes pumping in your head throughout your workout, you’re gonna be having a whole lot of fun. Search for “workout” on your streaming service and lose yourself in the music, the moment. You can thank me later.

BE YOUR OWN COACH

Need a good work out routine? There’s an app for that! Most applications you download to your phone have options to customize them to your own taste and ability. There are a few routines I love, but hate a couple of the exercises within them. In my case, my app suggests a number of exercises that you can swap out that fulfills the same purpose. Make the work out routine yours and yours alone.
