My recollection of my father is a bit hazy these days, as it’s been nearly 42 years since the last day I walked into our family room and said my last “Goodnight, Dad” and slipped up the stairs to bed.

My memories of the next morning are filled with images of the phone ringing and people asking to speak to him, my grandmother’s face when she knew before she knew, the ambulance crew (which I didn’t see but heard), people stopping by but not quite knowing what to say, and just that devastating realization that I’d never see my Dad in the way I’d seen him for all my life.

Getting away from the whole scene for a bit that afternoon, I remember hearing a song called “Time” by the Alan Parsons Project on the radio. The lyrics still haunt me sometimes to this day:

Time
Flowing like a river
Time
Beckoning me
Who knows when we shall meet again
If ever?

But time
Keeps flowing like a river (on and on)
To the sea
To the sea

‘Til it’s gone forever
Gone forever
Gone forevermore

Literally, time has made that event less traumatic than it was, and I don’t always think back to it every day as I have in the past, but mostly now I think back to what I miss most about the man I called Dad.

His sense of humor, his kindness, his steadfast approach to life, and his love for my Mom and us kids. I often wonder what life would be like for me had he survived that day. I would fear the butterfly effect would render the world I have today materially different, so I’m content to know that God’s plan is the way it was meant to be.

“Dad, even though I can’t hand you a Father’s Day card or share a hug, I want you to know that you are deeply loved and greatly missed. Your influence on my life remains immeasurable, and I strive to make you proud each day. Sending heartfelt wishes to heaven on this Father’s Day. Love you always.”

WHAT’S THE OLDEST THING YOU OWN THAT YOU STILL USE DAILY?

My mind? lol. Only joking. I do use one of those Correlle dishes circa 1970’s every day…warming stuff in the microwave mostly. I think I could drop the thing and it wouldn’t break!
