WHAT ARE THE 10 SHOWS WE’RE WATCHING NOW?

With the new season of television upon us and in full swing, we thought we’d share 10 of the programs we’re currently watching because we’re either loving them or giving them the time to grow on us. Some are from decades ago while others just began in the last few weeks. Some feature multiple award winners while others are truly newcomers.

Check out our watchlist and please take a moment to interact with us about what you’re watching and recommend. It’s easy to do by either just leaving a comment (above) or sending us feedback (button on the right).

TODAY’S 10 ARE NEWS STORIES & LINKS THAT ARE HELPFUL, INSIGHTFUL, INFORMATIVE, AND (HOPEFULLY) ENJOYABLE TOO.

ALASKA DAILY (ABC)

What is it about shows with the word “Alaska” in the title? That word never fails to catch my eye. Whether it’s questionable reality TV (“Alaskan Bush People”, “Deadliest Catch” and “Alaska: The Last Frontier”) or any movie set there (“Rugged Gold”, “Northern Exposure”), Alaska’s scenic beauty seems to always be the star of the show.

“Alaska Daily” isn’t a new concept…it’s simply the hard-nosed investigative journalist who is disgraced by jumping to conclusions on one story, and then rediscovering her heart, soul, and love for her craft by going back home again, so to speak.

Add two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank to the mix, and “Grey’s Anatomy” as your lead-in, and you’ll hopefully avoid the cold shoulder from viewers…even in Alaska.

THE WATCHER (Netflix)

You know how it goes…you’re on the hunt for something new to binge watch. After 15 seasons of “Heartland”, you want something with a bit more grit and edginess to it.

Leave it to Ryan Murphy to suck you in with “The Watcher”. Again, not the most original concept (happy family moves from the city to an idyllic yet too good to be true home in the suburbs, only to be terrorized by mysteries, secrets, weirdo neighbors, and…oh yeah, a secret cult whose members drink children’s blood to retain their youth). If you’ve seen “Poltergeist”, “The Amityville Horror”, or even “Dream House”, you get the picture.

Loosely based upon a true story, the suspense and the multitude of suspects keeps you coming back for more. So, tune in and make yourself at home.

FIRE COUNTRY (CBS)

Remember the 2013 series “Bates Motel”, starring Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore? It serialized the classic Hitchcock film “Psycho” over a number of years. Highmore’s Norman Bates had a brother, Dylan, played by Max Thieriot to great effect throughout the show’s 5 seasons.

Today, Highmore is known as Dr. Shaun Murphy on “The Good Doctor”, while Thieriot is now the creator and star of the new series “Fire Country”, playing Bode Donovan, a convict who joins a program fighting fires in an effort to reduce his prison sentence and also achieve redemption for his crime.

Although I question how many mysterious fires can sprout up for the same people for more than one season of episodes, the first three have been engaging and I look forward to how the drama plays out in the future.

THE PATIENT (FX/Hulu)

Setting the stage for this half-hour drama, Steve Carell is a psychotherapist whose wife has recently passed away after a long bout with cancer. Carell is kidnapped and imprisoned by serial killer Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson), who desperately seeks only one thing from the therapist. He wants Carell’s Dr. Alan Strauss to curb his urge to murder others.

Similar to Robin Williams, Carell effortlessly slips from his comedy style displayed in “The Office” to a dramatic role in this excellent series. My only complaint is that the episodes go by quickly and waiting for the next episode makes me feel like it’s 1985 all over again.

WALKER: INDEPENDENCE (CW)

So, with this new series, you get what you’d expect from a CW program. Beautiful women with hair, makeup and clothes that seem a bit too modern and out of their time for style (think “When Calls the Heart”), the heartthrob leading man that seems interchangeable with “Yellowstone”, “1883” or any other Taylor Sheridan series, and of course, the Native American wise Yoda-like co-star.

So, why watch this one? Here’s why. The main character’s (Abby Walker) husband is murdered before her eyes, and she is then driven by revenge. The Pinkertons! The good guy possibly being bad (or appears to be bad but may eventually be good after all) while the bad guy evolves to become the hero – maybe? What’s not to like?

EVIL LIVES HERE (ID)

Sometimes you find yourself between shows to binge, and you end up watching a few transitional episodes of “Naked & Afraid”, “Home Town” or even “Jeopardy”. That’s how I discovered “Evil Lives Here”.

The premise of the show involves close relatives of those who have committed unimaginable atrocities, who view photos and tell their own stories of growing up so close (and oftentimes unaware) to such evil.

Being in close proximity to Omaha, the premiere episode featuring Robbie Hawkins’ violent attack on a metro department store intrigued me. The signs that were there all along always leave you wondering if someone or something could have prevented the crime that shook the whole nation in 2007.

The one thing I’m many times left questioning after viewing an episode is what caused the person to cross that line. Oftentimes, it’s left unsaid.

UPDATED 10/21/2022

BLUE BLOODS (CBS)

Humans have rituals. Church on Sunday, lunch at noon, movies on the weekends, and “Blue Bloods” on Friday nights (or later on demand).

In the era of “defund the police”, somehow procedural dramas are still a huge and successful product of Hollywood. Who would think that a series about a mostly conservative law and legal family who meet regularly with each other around the table for family dinners would be a hit for 13 seasons?

Obviously, the stellar cast led by Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, and Bridget Moynahan speaks volumes, along with the supporting case and excellent writing.

My only question is how many times has Baker looked through the PC’s door over all those episodes? Has to be in the hundreds!

TELL ME LIES (HULU)

What happens when a college-bound woman meets an extremely charming man who is likely the worst possible choice in a partner in any number of ways for her?

Consequences ensue that cannot be undone, endless parties take place (when do these people actually go to class?), drinks are downed like water, the profanity is pretty severe, and yes, naturally sex…a whole lot of sex.

We’re presently in the middle of the series and both the wife and I are searching for the plot amongst those endless parties, while at the same time, being entertained enough to not quite give up on it yet.

THE AMAZING RACE (CBS)

After being delayed for nearly 2 years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, “The Amazing Race” recently returned for its 34th season, its second outing since the pandemic.

Much about AR34 is different than previous seasons. This is the first outing beginning somewhere other than the U.S. (Muhich, Germany), gone are the filler “non-elimination” round episodes (do well or you’re gone), and the locations are breathtaking and unexpected (Petra in the Kingdom of Jordan and Florence, Italy for instance).

The cast is overwhelmingly likeable and the challenges they face are new, creative and a joy to watch.

Lastly, I swear Kevin Hart’s secret twin brother is Lumumba on this season. See for yourself!

THE DARRELL BROOKS CHRISTMAS PARADE TRIAL (YOUTUBE)

In November 2021, a Ford SUV careened through a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, causing more than 60 injuries and resulting in 6 deaths, among them 4 members of the “Dancing Grannies”, as well as an innocent 8-year-old child.

As if that weren’t bad enough, the alleged perpetrator of the rampage, 39-year-old Darrell Brooks, opted to represent himself in his trial, which is definitely must-see to believe TV on YouTube.

Although the trial is serious business and we are in no way suggesting it’s entertainment in any form, Mr. Brooks has made the events in the courtroom a spectacle that makes the O.J. Simpson trial look like C-SPAN.

Childish antics, constant disruptions & objections, blatant disrespect of the court and Judge Dorow, as well as a shirtless tantrum and ongoing outbursts resulted in him being removed from the courtroom on multiple occasions.
