Every time you hop in the car and see mph on the dashboard, you’re looking at a measurement system that’s basically a historical time capsule. Most of the world uses km/h, but the U.S. — along with a handful of countries — still sticks to miles.

It’s one of those everyday quirks that feels normal until you realize it’s actually a fascinating story of tradition, engineering, global standardization… and a few moments where America said, “Nah, we’re good.”

Most nations adopted metric because:

Once a country goes metric, km/h becomes the natural speed unit.

That’s why when you travel abroad, your rental car dashboard suddenly looks like it’s speaking a different language.

Three reasons keep mph alive:

A. Cost

Changing every road sign, speedometer, manual, and regulation would be a multi‑billion‑dollar project.

B. Culture

Americans grew up with mph. Drivers think in mph. Car enthusiasts talk in mph. Speed limits feel “right” in mph.

C. Momentum

Once a system is entrenched, switching becomes harder every year.

Metric makes sense — but mph is familiar.

🔄 7. The Fun Twist: U.S. Cars Do Support km/h

Every modern car sold in the U.S. can switch to km/h with a button press.

Why? Because manufacturers sell globally, and metric is the world’s standard.

So even though America doesn’t use km/h, your dashboard is quietly bilingual.
