If you happen to be like me, today is a bit of a bittersweet holiday. My mom passed away several decades ago after a long illness (my dad had passed away several decades before that). I’m sure she was a great daughter, aunt, sister, grandmother, wife and friend to all of those with whom her life touched. But to me, no one could have been more fortunate than to have her as their mom. She taught me humility, empathy, forgiveness, a love for God, the safety in boundaries, patience, endless positivity, and how to find the best traits within my own character.
If I didn’t know better looking back today, I would say God provided me a guardian angel from day one. Not a moment goes by that I’m not envious of those who you are touching still today Mom, whether it’s through me or through an otherworldly avenue. You are truly a blessing.
By the way, I bet you had something to do with the beauty and grace that is my mother-in-law Karen, as she certainly has never seemed like the stereotypical MIL to me. She’s always treated me like the son she never had (it’s almost like you hand-picked her) and has loved me in a way that is just what was needed at the time I needed it most. I am doubly blessed.
Then there is my beautiful wife Jett. Her love and skill at motherhood would prove to be unmatched, and I hope our grown girl knows in her heart just how much she gave of herself to your own childhood. We are both truly blessed.

WHAT DOES FREEDOM MEAN TO YOU?
Politics is something I tend to avoid addressing on the site, but today’s prompt is one we all should be thinking about and promoting. Freedom whether you’re a Democrat, Republican or the other parties is imperative to life as an American, but we must also be law abiding citizens. It’s what the world looks to us as a shining example of.
Amongst the many tees in my closet is one I purchased on Amazon that simply has the phrase “TRUTH…The new hate speech” emblazoned on the front. It has always gotten me lots of looks and comments. During the pandemic, there were a lot of lies being told as unequivocable truth and many truths being censored as lies. That’s a great example of what freedom is not.
I believe freedom is when everyone in the country has the same rights and responsibilities as others and we are governed by the U.S. Constitution as it was meant to be followed. Lawmakers should not be passing laws that seem on the surface to be great for the country and yet have underlying intentions that have nothing to do with the law being passed (while they then criticize the other party for not voting for something that seems so needed and logical to pass.) The Trojan horse in this case is usually something relating to sacred cows like veterans’ affairs, social security, middle class tax burden, and the like).
Additionally, the separation of powers within the branches of government should be adhered to rather than legislating through the use of Executive Orders.
We always think of freedom as being espoused within the first amendment to the Constitution. It seems these days it’s all well and good until someone says something you don’t like.
If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable.

Journalists have become activists within their role of reporting, choosing what stories are reported on and how they’re reported, regardless of truth. To be honest, I don’t care what high paid news anchors feel about news…I want to know the circumstances surrounding that news. I’m intelligent enough to discern what I feel about it for myself.
I could literally go on and on for pages here, but with today being Mother’s Day, I’m going to wish you Moms the best of days and leave you with this additional quote on liberty (freedom):
