THE LETTER “T” – IT’S IMPOR-IN!

Perhaps you do it and don’t even realize. Perhaps others do it and it annoys you and you think they’re uneducated simpletons. Perhaps you think it’s the “in” thing with the TikTok generation.

What is “it”? This phenomenon is known as “T-Glottalization” and is a process that occurs for many English speakers, causing the letter “t” to be pronounced as a glottal stop in certain positions within words. “Button” is now “buh-in”, “mountain” becomes “mou-in”, and “curtain” transforms into…you guessed “cur-in”.

With earliest mentions coming from Scotland in the 19th century, the grammatical oddity is nothing new. It has been recently further popularized in America by younger speakers, flowing over to the general population within the United States.

What are your thoughts on the dropped “T”? Annoyance or no big deal? Let us know in the comments below.
