On the eighteenth day of highlighting lesser known Christmas songs (or versions of classics I gravitate to each year), today’s song is “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” by MercyMe. The song is a cut from 2005’s “The Christmas Sessions”, which also features their original “Joseph’s Lullaby”. Formed in 1994 in Oklahoma, the band achieved crossover success in 2001 with their single “I Can Only Imagine”, from their INO Records debut “Almost There”, which eventually spawned a film in 2018.

MercyMe has since released 8 additional studio albums as well as a Greatest Hits collection. The group has had 13 consecutive top 5 hits, with 7 of them reaching number one. Among their biggest hits are “Word of God Speak”, “Here with Me”, “Homesick”, “In The Blink of an Eye”, “So Long Self”, “Hold Fast”, “God With Us”, and “Almost Home”.
From an accolades perspective, MercyMe has been nominated for 14 Billboard Music Awards (winning 1) and 6 Grammy nominations. Additionally, they’ve won 3 American Music Awards and 8 Dove Awards.
MercyMe’s latest album release is “Lifer” from 2017 and their newest single is 2020’s “Say I Won’t”.
