Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks has consistently demonstrated a fascination with introspective and often enigmatic lyrics. In “Landslide,” she compels us to reflect on the pivotal moment when we transitioned from the innocence of childhood to the complexities of adulthood.
Personally, that fateful summer when my dad passed away, I had just turned 17, utterly oblivious to the realities of adulthood. As I’ve shared before, being the youngest of seven siblings meant that earning respect as an actual adult was an uphill battle I fought daily. I was accustomed to having my desires fulfilled, with a sense of entitlement that surged within me even before it became a trend among younger generations.
I took my love, I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
‘Til the landslide brought me down-Stevie Nicks
Having to navigate life as both a high school student and a college freshman simultaneously, all to secure social security in the wake of my father’s death, was the first moment I truly grasped what it meant to take charge of my own life as an adult—an adult burdened by the weight of loss and responsibility, yet fiercely determined to rise above it all.
My journey into adulthood was filled with challenges and triumphs, and I’m truly grateful that the right individuals crossed my path to guide me along the way. Today, I embrace the fact that the road was anything but easy; it has shaped me into a stronger and more resilient person because of it.
