If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Having been born and raised in the midwestern United States, most of my exposure to other locations has been through vacation experiences. It’s important to note that visiting a stunning destination during a vacation does not provide a comprehensive understanding of what daily life in that place would be like.

My intention is to reflect on some of my most cherished vacation destinations, as well as aspirational locations on my bucket list, before disclosing my ultimate selection at the conclusion of today’s post. I encourage you to also share your preferred place to reside in the comments section.

WASHINGTON, DC

As a tourist, I very much enjoyed visiting our capital. The bustling mall offered a wide array of shops and eateries, providing a vibrant atmosphere for both locals and visitors. The museums were eye-opening, showcasing our rich cultural heritage and artistic achievements through the centuries. When it comes to dining, the diverse range of restaurants catered to every palate, from traditional local cuisine to international flavors. Additionally, exploring the government institutions gave me valuable insights into the country’s political and administrative workings.

We also explored the vibrant city of Orlando, known for its world-class theme parks and lively atmosphere. In addition to visiting Disney World and Daytona Beach, we indulged in the diverse culinary scene, savoring mouthwatering dishes at quaint cafes and renowned restaurants. As we strolled through the charming streets, we stumbled upon a delightful restaurant named “Daryl’s” where we left our mark by carving our initials into the wall. Although “Daryl’s” may have become a treasured memory of the past, the spirit of our adventure lives on in the stories we share.

SORRENTO, ITALY

Our villa overlooking the Bay of Naples was truly a sight to behold, offering us a prime view of the majestic Mt. Vesuvius and the ancient ruins of Pompeii, while the alluring Isle of Capri lay within reach. Every morning, we were greeted by the mesmerizing beauty of the bay, and as the day unfolded, the ever-changing hues of the sea captivated our senses. The terracotta rooftops of the nearby villages added a charming touch to the landscape, and the distant sound of the waves crashing against the shore created a serene ambiance. It truly was a spectacular experience to immerse ourselves in the rich history and natural splendor of this region, and the views from our villa were simply breathtaking, leaving an indelible impression upon our hearts and minds.

KEYSTONE, SOUTH DAKOTA

I recall driving into Keystone and seeing Mt. Rushmore off in the distance. The majestic presence of the monument against the backdrop of the sky left a lasting impression on me. As we navigated the steep driveway into the hotel’s parking lot, the anticipation of exploring the historic site added an element of excitement to the journey. Once in the room, the cozy ambiance provided a welcoming retreat after a day of adventures. We dined at a charming place on the main street, surrounded by the warm glow of crimson decor that evoked a sense of old-world elegance. The ambiance reminded me of the opulence depicted in Molly Brown’s Denver mansion from the film “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” adding a touch of nostalgia to the dining experience.

PARIS, FRANCE

My memories take me back to leaving the subway up the street and turning around just as the Eiffel Tower was flickering with lights from the ground to the top. It was an amazing first look at the city of lights. I also recall our super tiny hotel room. If you climbed over the bed and stretched your neck out to the left as far as you could, you could see the Eiffel Tower off in the distance.
As we ventured out from the hotel, the charming streets of Paris unfolded before us, lined with romantic cafes and boutique shops. The aroma of freshly baked croissants filled the air, and the sound of accordion music added to the enchanting atmosphere. We spent our days exploring world-renowned landmarks such as the Louvre, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the picturesque Montmartre district. Each evening, we savored delectable French cuisine at cozy bistros, sipping on fine wine and savoring the culinary delights that Paris is famous for. The memories of that trip still fill me with a sense of joy and wonder.

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

My family and I were staying at the Sheraton in downtown Boston when the Twin Towers in New York City were hit with airplanes during the 9/11 attacks – planes that came from the airport we’d been at just the day before. I remember being frisked to return to our hotel. I remember panic in the streets and then dead silence in the streets. I remember bomb squad trucks and snipers on the roofs of tall buildings. I remember driving to Maine as the stress and anxiety melted away. I remember the huge American flags lashed to groups of evergreen trees along the interstate. I remember the feeling of our all of us just being Americans with no political divide…for a few days. Amidst the chaos and fear, there was a sense of unity and empathy that formed among people from all walks of life, bound together by the common goal of supporting one another. The way strangers reached out with kindness and compassion, the way communities rallied together to assist those in need, these acts of humanity left a lasting impression. As we continued our journey to Maine, the landscapes seemed to offer solace, each passing mile a gentle reminder of the resilience and hope that transcends tragedy. The sight of the American flags fluttering in the wind symbolized not only patriotism but also the unwavering spirit of the nation. It was a time of profound emotional intensity, a time that granted clarity on the importance of unity and solidarity in the face of adversity.

Estes Park was so much fun to visit. Hiking in the Rocky Mountain National Park and staying at the Stanley Hotel just made our visit an exceptional experience. The oxygen deprivation took a bit to get used to, but eventually I wasn’t gasping! The pizza joint downtown is great as well. Exploring the picturesque trails and spotting diverse wildlife in the national park added an adventurous twist to our trip. The historic charm of the Stanley Hotel, known for its intriguing history and captivating architecture, provided a unique and memorable stay. Additionally, the breathtaking views of the majestic mountains during our hikes left a lasting impression on us, making it a truly remarkable getaway.

LONDON, ENGLAND

Truly amazing city. The museums are so diverse and captivating, from the iconic British Museum to the fascinating Victoria and Albert Museum. And the historical landmarks, each one teeming with stories and secrets waiting to be discovered. The Crown Jewels, a mesmerizing display of opulence and history, left us in awe. “Hey, look kids! Big Ben, Parliament!” We had a blast in London and would go back in a heartbeat. The bustling streets, the charming red double-decker buses, and the endless array of culinary delights made our time in London truly unforgettable.

DES MOINES, IOWA

There’s no place like home. Iowa, often considered flyover country, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Beyond its vast fields of agriculture, Iowa boasts a vibrant tapestry of festivals celebrating cultural diversity, a rich culinary scene filled with farm-to-table delights, a captivating history that tells the story of the heartland, and warm, welcoming people who embody the essence of Midwestern hospitality. It’s no wonder that Iowa served as the setting for a significant part of my novel, “Relentless”. In particular, the city of Des Moines, with its blend of urban vibrancy and small-town charm, provided the perfect backdrop for the unfolding narrative.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

What person doesn’t love the excitement of the Windy City, Chicago? The diverse and vibrant culture, the stunning architecture, and the beautiful Lake Michigan make it a captivating destination. Michigan Avenue, also known as the Magnificent Mile, offers world-class shopping and iconic landmarks like the Wrigley Building and the Tribune Tower. The Museum of Science and Industry, located in the historic Hyde Park neighborhood, provides fascinating exhibits and interactive displays for visitors of all ages. Additionally, The Field Museum is a treasure trove of natural history, boasting impressive dinosaur skeletons and ancient artifacts. As for The Shedd Aquarium, it allows visitors to explore the wonders of the aquatic world, featuring a variety of marine species and engaging educational programs. And of course, the culinary scene in Chicago is a culinary journey in itself, with renowned deep-dish pizza, sizzling steaks, and diverse international cuisine to delight every palate. The Windy City truly offers a thrilling mix of attractions and experiences for all to enjoy.

CAPE ELIZABETH, MAINE

A number of years ago, I was assigned a new client in Maine for work (I work in employee benefits), and when the implementation was live, I also travelled to the area to attend benefit fairs held by the client to introduce the new benefits to their employees. My rental car went to a number of locations throughout Maine in the span of a few days that fall, and the scenery was simply magical. Driving past lakes with trees in full color as leaves shuffled behind in my vehicle’s wake was an enchanting experience, reminiscent of a picturesque painting come to life. The vibrant hues of the autumn foliage painted a breathtaking landscape, creating a mesmerizing backdrop against which the journey unfolded. Later, my family returned and spent some time in Ogunquit as well, with Marginal Way being one of my favorite hikes in my lifetime. The rugged coastline, with waves crashing against the rocks and the invigorating ocean breeze, provided a sense of tranquility and raw beauty that left an indelible mark in my memory. The expansive views from the cliffside path and the dramatic play of light and shadow at sunrise and sunset made it an unforgettable experience, further cementing Maine as a place of profound natural wonder and serene charm.

If I could live anywhere in the world, I’d prefer the reasonable (if you can call it that) cost of living in the Midwest. I’m happy living right where I am. It’s safe, it’s clean, it’s fun, it’s family oriented, and it’s got a ton of options. The Midwest offers a wonderful blend of city life and natural beauty, with charming small towns and vibrant urban centers. The people here are friendly and welcoming, and the sense of community is truly heartwarming. Additionally, the four distinct seasons bring a variety of outdoor activities, from skiing in the winter to hiking and boating in the summer. Overall, the Midwest provides a balanced and enriching lifestyle that is hard to find elsewhere.

Some places (London, Paris, Orlando) are indeed amazing destinations, filled with rich history, iconic landmarks, and vibrant cultures. However, despite their allure, I can’t help but feel overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle that come with living in those bustling cities. Personally, I find solace in the ability to navigate my hometown with ease, where I can reach any place within minutes, freeing myself from the hours typically spent in traffic or crowded public transportation. Thanks to the convenience of air travel, I can escape to the glitzy lights of Las Vegas within a few short hours, satisfying my craving for excitement and adventure without sacrificing the tranquility of my day-to-day life. What more can one ask for than the perfect balance of accessibility and escapism?

The winner in my book?

DES MOINES, IOWA!
