As I look back to the early days of 2020, a time when uncertainty and fear gripped the world, I find myself reminiscing about the unique experiences we all shared. Here are some vivid memories that stand out:

- Gloves at the Gas Pump: I recall donning gloves to pump gas at my neighborhood station. It felt surreal, like a scene from a sci-fi movie.
- Contactless Pizza Delivery: Watching the pizza delivery person place our order on the stoop and retreat to a safe distance became the new normal. It was a small act, but it symbolized the precautions we all took.
- Kate Winslet Moments: My daughter, inspired by “Contagion,” embraced the role of a contagion expert. Her newfound knowledge led to both amusement and concern.
- Mail-In Ballots: In an election year, mail-in ballots took center stage. They became a forced lifeline for some and an avenue for election interference for others.
- The Wet Market Controversy: The origins of COVID-19 were hotly debated. The Wuhan Institute of Virology, just 400 meters from the wet market, added intrigue to the narrative.
- China’s Flight Dilemma: The paradox of China allowing international flights while restricting domestic air travel left us questioning the official narrative.
- Nursing Home Isolation: The heart-wrenching isolation faced by nursing home residents—dying alone, separated from loved ones—left an indelible mark. Decisions made by politicians weighed heavily on our collective conscience.
- Heroes Among Us: Amid the chaos, heroes emerged—the essential workers who braved the frontlines, sacrificing their health to care for others. Their unwavering commitment inspired us all.
How have I personally adapted to the changes brought on by the pandemic? Thankfully, I work for an employer who values both the needs of the company and the needs of its employees, making hard decisions as the factors impacting the world changed constantly. I’m blessed to have worked for such a great company.
In December of 2020, I experienced COVID-19 firsthand, but thankfully didn’t lose my sense of smell or taste, instead feeling an overwhelming sense of fatigue for a few days, not unlike bouts of the flu I’d had in prior years.
Overall, my life hasn’t changed drastically because of the past 3 years (thankfully they figured out that masks don’t work). I’m still alive and kicking.
As we move forward, let’s remember these moments—the fear, the resilience, and the human spirit that prevailed. We’ve come a long way, together.
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN
