Installment 21 of our featured novel “Relentless” is (finally) here! If you’ve missed the earlier installments and would like to join our readership, be sure to check out the novel’s home page HERE.
We are publishing the novel in small installments, so it takes only minutes to keep up with the story. Many years ago, we were fans of Stephen King’s installment-based publishing of “The Green Mile” over many months, so we are following in that vein as a feature on Moteventure.

RELENTLESS – D.S. FACTOR
Lights began flashing inside the SUV as Abi’s blood pressure continued to rise. The vehicle was now on a course directly for her, with the sirens blaring as well. Deliberating on what to do next, she slid her own vehicle closer to the side of the road, parodying the idea of pulling over to let an emergency vehicle pass, while also preparing to cut and run at the slightest hint of trouble.
The SUV barreled faster toward her and then in a fleeting moment, passed and continued down the road with a plume of dust expanding in its wake.
Chapter Eight
Breathing a deep sigh of relief, Abi continued her exit from Grafton, slipping across the border into Pennsylvania after a few hours of driving. Eventually entering the city limits of Pittsburgh, she navigated to Pittsburgh International Airport, watching the signs above and slipping the Rogue into the lane marked “extended parking” (45 days according to their website).
Noting the location of the Hyatt Regency hotel near the extended parking area, Abi purposefully located a lot as far away from that high traffic area as possible, bringing the vehicle to a stop in a parking spot in Lot 11T. Scanning left and right, she jumped stealthily and cat-like out of the car and searched for a similar Nissan Rogue in the adjacent Lot 13K. Once located, she replaced its plates with ones she’d removed from her own car, returning to collect her personal items and slap on the decoy plates before exiting the parking garage.
Jumping on the Airport Flyer shuttle service to downtown Pittsburgh, Abi arrived and hoofed it the rest of the way to the Intermodal Bus Terminal downtown, reviewing the Greyhound options before paying cash for a ticket to Des Moines, Iowa.
Returning from a quick visit to the East Village, Winnifred Starr unlocked her door at Velocity and dropped her bags on the island inside the apartment. With high ceilings and an open concept contemporary design, Velocity overlooked the Des Moines skyline through floor to ceiling windows. Within walking distance of downtown as well as Principal Park, the complex was a huge draw for up-and-coming business and creative professionals like herself.
In the kitchen, Winnifred spooned an Activia vanilla yogurt into a bowl and mixed in granola, a handful of almonds, half a banana and some blueberries, stirred it up well and then grabbed the tv remote and kicked back on the couch in the living room to watch the latest episode of “Outlander”. Just as Claire was about to be captured by British soldiers on her path to meet Jamie’s biological son William, the phone on the end table began pulsating to Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition”.
Initially displaying “Unknown Caller” on the iPhone screen, Winnifred hesitated a few moments (thinking to herself how many political calls she gets living in Iowa) before sliding her finger across the interface to accept the call.
“Hello?”
“Winn, it’s Abi!”
“Abi Spencer? What are you up to girl?”
“Oh my God…I’m so glad you picked up. Any chance you’re home?”
“Actually, I just got back from Raygun and am just sitting here watching ‘Outlander’. Got to get my Jamie Fraser fix in when I can you know,” she added with a throaty chuckle.
“Buzz me up then!” Abi exclaimed.
“You’re in Des Moines? Here now? Since when?” Winn inquired with confusion as she moved across the room and pressed the button to unlock the entry door seven floors below.
After a minute or two, she opened the door to greet an Abi Spencer she’d never seen before.
Abi quickly stepped across the threshold, removed her sunglasses, closed the door and pressed herself against it before sliding slowly down to the floor. Then she wept.

WRITE ABOUT YOUR MOST EPIC BAKING OR COOKING FAIL.
During college, I was making lasagna in a supposedly “oven-safe” glass baking pan. Toward the end of the process, I opened the oven door, leaned down to pull it out of the oven, when it literally exploded into a million shards of glass and pasta all over the kitchen. Thankfully no one was hurt in the making of the pasta.
