DESCRIBE A RANDOM ENCOUNTER WITH A STRANGER THAT STUCK OUT POSITIVELY TO YOU.

While vacationing in Rome a number of years ago, we were craving some American food (yeah, I know…it’s Italy!). We ended up crossing a street to the Hard Rock Cafe. As we stepped back onto the sidewalk, an Italian woman met our eyes, and said “you must be Americans.” We didn’t quite know what to think as we were wearing pretty generic clothing. After mentally hoping she wasn’t a hater of Americans (which was the in thing worldwide at the time), we said “Yes, but how did you know?”. She looked calmly at us and said, “Americans are always smiling.” We entered the restaurant to a huge crowd of Romans singing “Thriller”…and smiling too of course.

DESCRIBE A DECISION YOU MADE IN THE PAST THAT HELPED YOU LEARN AND GROW.

Fresh out of college, my wife and I decided to purchase our first car. Instead of studying up and realizing that a brand-new car depreciates greatly once it’s driven off the lot, we bought a new Nissan Sentra. Later when we had learned and grown and needed a dependable back-up car, we found a used Honda Civic with low miles for less than $3K. That was 8 or 9 years ago, and the Civic is in the garage still going strong at 180,000+ miles.

DESCRIBE A POSITIVE THING A FAMILY MEMBER HAS DONE FOR YOU.

Most recently, my sister-in-law dropped everything and came to house sit with Scamp (our Corgi) for 4 days in March when my wife and I took a short vacation. We’re not big fans of kenneling him, so the worry was gone knowing she was there taking care of the house and our pup! That’s really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her positive influence on our lives.

DESCRIBE SOMETHING YOU LEARNED IN HIGH SCHOOL.

During my high school years, I learned a bit more about how the world works. Some people will love you and know everything about you, some will love you without really knowing you at all, and then there are the people who will dislike you for the very same reasons. In the words of Ricky Nelson, “you can’t please everyone, so you got to please yourself.”

WHAT’S THE MOST FUN WAY TO EXERCISE?

A number of years ago, I attended a home-grown gym near work that used a bootcamp style of exercise to get results. Our coaches would use creativity to bring us together, whether it be dodge ball with kickboxing gloves as ammo or playing blackjack where the suit on the card represented an exercise and the number represented the number of reps the losing team had to do each hand. We had “Challenge Days” each Wednesday and then on our birthday, we had to do birthday pull-ups! Group exercise is the way to go – at least for me!

IF YOU COULD BE A CHARACTER FROM A BOOK OR FILM, WHO WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?

With Easter having just been observed, I believe it would be amazing to have been one of the apostles that Jesus first appeared before following his crucifixion and resurrection. The book, of course, would be The Bible. Does it need an explanation as to why? I don’t think so.

WHAT OLYMPIC SPORTS DO YOU ENJOY WATCHING THE MOST?

When I tune in for the Olympic games, I might watch the Opening Ceremonies, and then I like to see more of the Winter games than Summer games usually. Skiing, Bobsleigh, Hockey, Luge, Skeleton and Nordic Combined tend to grab my attention.

HOW HAVE YOU ADAPTED TO THE CHANGES BROUGHT ON BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC?

Initially, I recall filling my car with gas using gloves and having a pizza left on my doorstep. Now, I work remotely and mostly try to not think a cold is more than just a cold.
