As with most other holidays, the commercialization of the celebration sometimes obscures the true meaning of the holiday, particularly with Valentine’s Day.
It is believed that a priest named Valentine during the third century was jailed for arranging marriages that had been banned by law and was subsequently sentenced to death. While incarcerated, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and on his date of execution (February 14th), it is said he sent his love a letter “from your Valentine”.
And then, as they say, the rest is history.
