Daily writing prompt
If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?

Dogs are remarkable creatures, known for their ability to learn and adapt to their surroundings with impressive speed. From mastering basic commands like “sit” and “stay” to picking up tricks that amuse and entertain, their eagerness to please makes training a rewarding experience. However, there are moments when we wish our furry companions could grasp more complex concepts, much like a human can.

Our 8-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi is quite adept at learning new skills and, as many dogs do, will jump into his whole repertoire of abilities at the drop of a hat, particularly where a treat is involved.

He can sit, stay, come, catch, fetch, find it, drop it, leave it, stop it, roll-over, roll to his tummy, play dead when you say “bang”, and a host of other helpful talents. There are, however, a few skills I wish I could get him to understand and perfect.

QUIET!

Man’s best friend can be a big part of life, making you forget the times they drive you crazy. Since working from home during the pandemic, I’ve spent many hours with Scamp by my side, on the couch, or at the back door watching the squirrels in the neighborhood.

It’s mid-afternoon, and he knows my wife will be home soon. From then on, any noise outside makes him bark at the back door. If I don’t respond, he whimpers and comes downstairs to my home office to make sure I hear him.

Oh, to be able to say “It’s nothing buddy. Please be quiet.” and have him understand and obey.

ELECTRONICS WILL NOT HARM YOU

The end result is pretty much the same as “Quiet!” above, but the origin of the noise is something very unusual to me.

Scamp can be sleeping upstairs on our bed, and if I plug in a USB cord into my computer or phone two floors away, he will bark loudly and come running to stop it. He doesn’t try to bite the cord or devices but looks at me like I’ve done something unforgivable. Even when I let him see and smell the cord, he does this every…single…time!
