What historical event fascinates you the most?

My daughter attended college about an hour away from home, and in one of her years, she chose to study abroad in Wales for a semester, eager to immerse herself in a new culture and gain unique experiences that would shape her perspective on the world. During her time there, she not only explored the stunning landscapes of the Welsh countryside but also delved into the rich history and traditions of the local communities, forming lasting friendships with fellow students from diverse backgrounds. The academic program she enrolled in was both challenging and enriching, allowing her to engage with prominent professors while fully utilizing the opportunity to travel around the UK, visiting iconic landmarks and historical sites that had long captured her imagination.

LONDON

During late October of her year abroad, my wife and I eagerly scheduled a visit, meeting her and her boyfriend (now husband) in London for a day filled with exploration and nostalgia. We started our adventure with a leisurely stroll along the banks of the Thames, soaking in the crisp autumn air while admiring the vibrant fall foliage. Afterward, we enjoyed lunch at a café tucked away in a charming alley, sharing stories and laughter over delectable dishes. The highlight of our day was visiting iconic landmarks, including the majestic Tower of London, the British Museum and the historic Westminster Abbey, where we took countless photos to capture the memories we created together.

Eventually, our time together ended, and we said goodbye to the pair at a train station, waving goodbye like we were at Harry Potter’s Platform Nine & Three Quarters.

PARIS

Next, we spent a few days in Paris, immersing ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the city. One particularly amusing experience was attempting to wash clothes at a quaint laundromat located just down the street from our hotel, where everything was written in French, a language I struggled to understand. The sight of unfamiliar symbols on the washing machines and instructions left me feeling somewhat bewildered. Thankfully, a friendly local woman noticed my confusion and came to my aid; we more or less played a game of charades, gesturing and miming to communicate. Her patience and cheerful demeanor made the process enjoyable, and after a series of laughs and exchanges, I eventually managed to follow her guidance and got everything clean! This little adventure not only resulted in fresh clothes but also served as a reminder of the kindness of strangers in a foreign land.

SORRENTO

The final leg of our trip was travelling over the breathtaking French Alps, where we marveled at the spectacular views of snow-capped peaks and charming alpine villages nestled in the valleys below. Each twist and turn of the mountain roads revealed a postcard-worthy scene, with the clear blue sky providing the perfect backdrop for our adventure. Our journey then took us down to the sun-kissed shores of southern Italy, where we found ourselves in the picturesque town of Sorrento, a gem overlooking the azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Here, we indulged in authentic Italian cuisine, savoring delicious dishes that celebrated the region’s rich culinary heritage, while leisurely strolling through vibrant streets lined with local shops bursting with artisanal goods. We spent our afternoons sipping espresso at quaint cafés, absorbing the lively atmosphere and relishing the warm Mediterranean breeze that enveloped us like a comforting embrace. The gentle sounds of laughter and chatter filled the air, creating a delightful backdrop that made our stay truly unforgettable. Which leads me to the crux of our prompt today.

POMPEII

In the awe-inspiring shadow of Mt. Vesuvius lies the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Pompeii, a once-thriving heart of Roman civilization. This vibrant town met a tragic fate in 79 AD when the mighty volcano erupted, unleashing a torrent of ash and pyroclastic flows that engulfed the city beneath a thick shroud of volcanic material. This catastrophic event, while devastating, has paradoxically preserved the streets, buildings, and artifacts for centuries, offering modern archaeologists and historians a rare window into the daily lives of its inhabitants and the catastrophic consequences of nature’s fury.

There is an undeniable human allure to events like this, captivating both our imaginations today and throughout history. I remember my fascination with Pompeii igniting in elementary school — a spark that only grew brighter with time. As an adult, I had the remarkable opportunity to visit Chicago for an exhibition on Pompeii, which left me utterly amazed.

Yet nothing compares to the soul-stirring experience of walking along the actual streets of this fated city. I found myself leaping across the colossal stone blocks designed to elevate pedestrians above the muddy pathways, each step echoing the lives that once thrived here. I strolled towards the amphitheater, taking a seat as if I were preparing to witness a fierce gladiatorial battle unfold before my very eyes.

Pompeii was a grander place than I had ever dared to envision. In the bustling heart of the city’s forum, a dedicated area showcased recovered artifacts and poignant plaster casts of the victims caught in that moment of tragedy. And looming over it all, steadfast and imperious, was Mt. Vesuvius — a constant reminder of the beauty and terror that nature can unleash.
