Daily writing prompt
What bothers you and why?

Life is full of minor irritations and pet peeves that can quickly escalate into sources of frustration and discontent. Everyday experiences, from navigating political discord to encountering overly landscaped front yards, can leave individuals feeling agitated and disheartened. Simple tasks like opening child-proof containers or enduring loud gum chewing can trigger annoyance, while larger societal issues like dealing with fake people and liars can sow seeds of deep-seated unease. Even seemingly harmless occurrences such as cooking fish in the microwave or enduring fireworks weeks before and after July 4th can become significant stressors in the tapestry of daily life. These seemingly trivial vexations can snowball into a tangible source of distress, impacting individuals in varied and often surprising ways.

POLITICAL DISCORD

Political discord has become a pervasive source of distress for many individuals. The deep-seated divisions within our country have given rise to heightened tensions and societal unrest. The incessant clashes of ideologies and beliefs often leave individuals feeling disheartened and disillusioned. The inability to find common ground and engage in constructive dialogue further exacerbates these feelings of unease.

OVERLY LANDSCAPED FRONT YARDS

Wikimedia

For unknown reasons, there are people out there who can’t resist turning their front yards into a chaotic mishmash of plants, tacky signs, grumpy-looking dogs, bird feeders, pink flamingos, holy figurines, and dilapidated RVs. Meanwhile, I’m firmly on Team “Less is More.”

CHILD-PROOF CONTAINERS THAT ARE ALSO ADULT-PROOF

Public Domain

Your child is crying after a doctor’s visit and a quick stop at the pharmacy. You struggle with the child-proof cap of an over-the-counter antihistamine, feeling a tickle in your own throat. After finally opening it, your child rests comfortably. When reaching for NyQuil to ward off your own symptoms, you practically have to stab the foil packet to get to the medication. I know safety is important, but sometimes it gets ridiculous!

MOVIES THAT SHOW THE BEST LAUGHS IN THE TRAILER

Universal Pictures

Not every movie is “Bridesmaids” or “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. Sometimes the previews leave you hoping for non-stop laughs, and then you get to the theater and realize you have already seen the best parts of the film.

CIGARETTE SMOKE

With our world changed over the past few decades to where those who smoke cigarettes are a bit on the fringe of society when it comes to where they can partake in a smoke, when I come across it now, I nearly choke as it’s not something I’m used to anymore (my Dad smoked a ton back in the 70’s).

LEAVING SHOPPING CARTS IN THE PARKING LOT INSTEAD OF PUTTING THEM AWAY

Creative Commons

When I purchased my sole brand-new vehicle, it was only a week before an incident occurred outside Target. Upon exiting the store, I discovered a shopping cart had collided with the passenger-side door. It is ironic that a shopping cart collection area was located just two cars away. The thought of people’s laziness or malicious intent deeply frustrates (bothers) me.

FAKE PEOPLE AND/OR LIARS

Wikimedia

Dealing with fake people and liars can be extremely bothersome. Whether it’s in personal relationships, the workplace, or public life, the lack of authenticity and honesty erodes trust and creates a sense of unease. It can be particularly disheartening when individuals pretend to be someone they’re not or deliberately deceive others for personal gain. The resulting breakdown in trust can lead to frustration, disappointment, and a reluctance to engage in meaningful interactions. The constant need to navigate through falsehoods and deceit can be mentally and emotionally exhausting, making it a significant source of distress for many people.

CHEWING GUM SUPER LOUDLY

This should bother me that much, but it still does. You’re in a quiet space and you’re amongst other people, and one person is smacking/cracking their gum with an open mouth like nobody’s business as if no one else is around. Shut your damn mouth or throw the freaking gum away buddy!

COOKING FISH IN THE MICROWAVE

Photo by Kindel Media on Pexels.com

I realize fish is extremely good for you with the Omega-3 oils and other nutrients they possess, but God help me when I walk into the breakroom over lunch and someone’s cooking something that smells a bit like roadkill from two days ago during a once a century heatwave. FIREWORKS WEEKS BEFORE AND AFTER JULY 4TH

Wikimedia

You’re either in the “don’t be so touchy” or the “my pet is terrified, and my father has PTSD” camps when it comes to setting off fireworks. The odd thing where I live is that the city allows the sales of fireworks, but not the setting off of fireworks within the city limits.

I think the natural response to a neighbor setting off fireworks super late at night is to be certain to mow your lawn right outside their bedroom window at like 6:30 am the next morning.
