MOTEVENTURE REACTIONS: HEROES – DAVID BOWIE

Tomorrow belongs to those who can hear it coming.

David Bowie

Chalk up my indifference initially to the music of David Bowie to my age and what was popular on Casey Kasem’s “American Top 40” each week. His voice seemed eccentric and unusual to a teenager. The flavor of the time for me was Peter Frampton (I’m In You), Pablo Cruise (Whatcha Gonna Do), Commodores (Brick House), Donna Summer (I Feel Love), and Foreigner (Cold as Ice). David Bowie’s sound was as if an alien had landed on Earth and decided to become a rock star.

Beginning with his first single, “Liza Jane” in 1964 (as Davie Jones with the King Bees) through “Lazarus” in 2015, David Bowie has released 128 singles, 26 studio albums, 9 live albums, 2 soundtracks, and 26 compilations to date. All told, he’s sold more than 100 million albums and is among the best-selling artists of all time. He is also the best-selling vinyl artist of the 21st century in 2022.

Bowie has been awarded 5 Grammys from his 17 total career nominations and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

Today’s featured track is “HEROES“, the title track from his twelfth studio album, released in mid-October of 1977. Peaking at #126 on Record World’s singles chart.

A 1998 cover version by the Wallflowers peaked at on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, with Bowie’s original version peaking at #11 on Billboard’s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart following his death on January 10, 2016.

…it’s a love story about the political and cultural divide between East and West Berlin, the city he then called home. And in another, a sarcastic comment about facing reality and being happy to be alive. Yet, many other aspects qualify the track as one of his greatest moments, from the music to the lyrics. Fueled by romance, imagination and black comedy, this was Bowie on the verge of genuine greatness, distilled.
