As I was running to pick up a pizza last evening (from a joint on Ingersoll called Big Tomato), the playlist I’d been listening to on Spotify finished and as is customary, the program chose/suggested a song it thinks I might like based upon my listening history.

Having finished with tracks from The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Aretha Franklin and AC/DC, you’d think I’d get a song in a similar vein. So, what was next? “Cruel Summer” from Taylor Swift for like the fiftieth time.

That inspired today’s post as I thought about the songs that are well and good but seem like they have to have the digital equivalent of a payola scheme happening behind the scenes to be suggested that often on Spotify.

Here are ten tracks that to me are always popping up even when they never appear on any playlist I’ve created. They are in no particular order.

MANIC MONDAY – THE BANGLES

I don’t really mind this song penned by Prince, but Spotify seems to throw it out there regardless of the genre I was just listening to.

SHOOP SHOOP SONG – CHER

Does he love you? You wanna know? Not so much. It’s in his switch (that’s where it is).

I WANT TO BREAK FREE – QUEEN

I want to break free…from Spotify’s auto play algorithm.

BOOGIE SHOES – KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND

The first measure of this disco classic blares from my speakers and I wanna put on…something else.

SARA SMILE – HALL & OATES

I’ll smile awhile for you once any other song from your catalogue of hits is playing.

STEPPIN’ OUT – JOE JACKSON

If I were in a hip club and this overplayed (on MTV back in the day) tune came on, I’d definitely be steppin’ out…to different club.

ALWAYS BE MY BABY – MARIAH CAREY

It’s true. It seems I can’t escape you, but I’ll still keep trying to shake you…always.

CRUEL SUMMER – TAYLOR SWIFT

The only thing more cruel is your OBVIOUSLY staged appearances during KC Chiefs’ games.

RED, RED WINE – UB40

I’d have sworn that with time, thoughts of this song would leave my head. But Spotify won’t let me forget.

FREE FALLIN’ – TOM PETTY

Love Jesus and America too. This song is a good one, just not my Tom Petty favorite.
