Who sang it best? Nat King Cole? Elvis Presley? Rhianna? Queen? There are so many songs that perfectly express our love for another.

Billboard magazine named “Endless Love”, the 1981 duet by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie, as the top love song of all time.

Whether you see their eyes in the morning sun, or you’re one of those people who want to fill the world with silly love songs, whether it swings…or jives, or your love has got someone so crazy right now, Valentine’s Day and music go hand in hand (right up there with flowers and candy) to set a mood, to show someone how you feel, and to celebrate an unbreakable connection between two souls.

In addition to today’s regular “Happy Valentine’s Day” message, I wanted to share the videos for a handful of my own personal favorite love songs. interspersed with some of my favorite lyrics from each track. Some made the Billboard list, but some definitely did not. Are my favorites your favorites?

I truly loved 90’s country music and this 1991 single from Collin Raye hit the mark in spades when it came to covering the chapters of a long-term love story, with not a dry eye after that last verse.

“If you get there before I do
Don’t give up on me
I’ll meet you when my chores are through
I don’t know how long I’ll be

But I’m not gonna let you down,
Darlin’, wait and see,
And between now and then
Until I see you again
I’ll be loving you,
Love, me”

Collin Raye (Love, Me)

Not your typical love song, but back when we were getting married, we loved this song and had it on our mixtape in the limo!

Kiss me once.
Kiss me twice.
Come on, pretty baby.
Kiss me deadly!

Lita Ford (Kiss Me Deadly)

Although it’s more of a breakup song, the longing for the lost love is beautiful and takes my mind immediately back to Julia Roberts in 1990’s “Pretty Woman”.

Lay a whisper,
On my pillow
Leave the winter,
On the ground.

Roxette (It Must Have Been Love)

Gorgeous lyrics and a superb performance of the Bob Dylan classic by the incomparable Garth Brooks. I ain’t seen nothing like this yet.

There ain’t nothin’ that I wouldn’t do,
Go to the ends of the earth for you.
Make you happy, make your dreams come true,
To make you feel my… love.

Garth Brooks (To Make You Feel My Love)

Another great movie classic (1978’s “Grease”), this one involving Olivia Newton-John’s Sandy Olsson yearning to save her relationship with John Travolta’s Danny Zuko.

But now there’s nowhere to hide,
Since you pushed my love aside
I’m out of my head,
Hopelessly devoted to you

Olivia Newton-John (Hopelessly Devoted to You)

The rock-a-billy rhythm and Freddie Mercury’s over the top delivery makes this track from 1980’s “The Game” a must have on any list, love songs or not.

This thing called love,
I just can’t handle it.
This thing called love,
I must get ’round to it, I ain’t ready.
Crazy little thing called love.

Queen (Crazy Little Thing Called Love)

A mid-tempo summer single from the late Queen of Disco, from her final studio album, 2008’s excellent “Crayons”. Can’t you feel the cool breeze and salty scent of the ocean as you’re walking along the beach hand in hand?

And it feels like love, and it feels so good,
(And it feels like love) I wanna feel like the roaring thunder,
Wanna be the heaven that your sky is under
Oh, I say, you say, oh (it’s like love)
All that I need, maybe it’s true,
The sand on my feet and you

Donna Summer (Sand on My Feet)

So many great songs by the late John Denver, but this one has always resonated with us and takes me right back to our wedding day.

Close your eyes and rest your weary mind.
I promise I will stay right here beside you.
Today our lives were joined,
Became entwined.
I wish that you could know how much I love you.

John Denver (My Sweet Lady)

My wife fell head over heels in love with this song from Canadian superstar Shania Twain. She loved it so much that she literally blew the speakers out in our old car…”jamming” to this ballad.

‘Cause I’m keeping you forever and for always
We will be together all of our days.
Wanna wake up every morning to your sweet face,
Always
Mmm, baby

Shania Twain (Forever and For Always)

Dan Fogelberg’s ability to conjure up the beauty of nature while extolling the virtues of a perfect love makes this soft rock classic from his 1979 album “Phoenix” resonate with me decades after its peak at #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 (ironically kept from the #1 spot by Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”.

Longer than there’ve been fishes in the ocean,
Higher than any bird ever flew,
Longer than there’ve been stars up in the heavens,
I’ve been in love with you.

Dan Fogelberg (Longer)

I’ve often said that when pop music gave way to hip hop (in the 90’s?), the story songs came alive in country music. This amazing single from Alan Jackson captures the life cycle of romance perfectly.

Remember when the sound of little feet,
Was the music we danced to week to week,
Brought back the love, we found trust,
Vowed we’d never give it up.
Remember when.

Alan Jackson (Remember When)
