WRITING MY OWN THRILLER, POST 23

Installment 23 of our featured novel “Relentless” is here!

We are publishing the novel in small installments, so it takes only minutes to keep up with the story. Many years ago, we were fans of Stephen King’s installment-based publishing of “The Green Mile” over many months, so we are following in that vein as a feature on Moteventure.

RELENTLESS – D.S. FACTOR

ABI

The sound was initially nearly undetectable, as if it were a ghostly presence coming from the house next door. As moments ticked by, Abi remained motionless in bed but could hear the enigmatic subtle thump seemingly moving closer in almost a stealth silence.

In the dappled darkness, the faint shuffling slowly crystalized to what were clearly footsteps moving agonizingly slowly outside the door. Grasping the hefty flashlight that lay under the bed, Abi slipped as quietly as she could across the room to the door, leaning in to listen more closely.

Without warning, the door burst open, knocking Abi off balance for a beat as a long shadow crossed the room.

“Girl, are you seriously not up yet? Today’s the day…we have tons to do!”

“Winn, what the fuck? You scared me half to death!” Abi responded, before breaking out in spirited laughter while rising from the floor after clutching her best friend’s hand.

Entering the kitchen, a contemporary design in blacks, grays, whites accented with stainless steel appliances, Abi took a seat at the island as Winn slid a plate of steaming, syrupy hotcakes and a mug of espresso next to an open laptop.

“You have a VPN on this, right?” Abi inquired after taking a sip of the hot drink.

“Girl, with the shit you’re looking for, that search engine better bounce around a hundred different servers before it even begins to dig into your question.”

Cracking a high voltage smile combined with a brief eyeroll, Abi contemplated the search string to input and the engine to use to perform the search itself.

“Search engines? Firefox, Brave, Duck Duck Go, Chrome? Which one makes the most sense?”

Winn thought about that for a moment before suggesting Abi access ZDNET to see if there was an article that might point her in the right direction.

“Surely a search inquiry asking for the most privacy-focused search engine must have a gazillion searches, right?” Winn asked herself out loud.

“I would assume so. I’m on that site now and found an article covering the most secure browsers out there. Have you ever heard of Tor before?” Abi inquired.

Winn considered the question for a moment, pulled out her iPhone and accessed the Safari browser, researching the Tor engine for a moment or two. “Looks like celebrities and journalists are Tor’s number one fans. Lots of words in this review like privacy, surveillance, anti-tracking and anonymity. Sounds like we found a winner.”

Moments later, Abi landed on the home page of Tor, downloaded it and input her name into the search bar, swiping away maple syrup from your face while she waited for the search results.

Along with the expected Facebook, LinkedIn, People Search, and numerous pages on actress Abigail Spencer (“Everything You Need to Know About Abigail Spencer’s Real Life!”), Abi found a peculiar entry on the news tab mentioning a lab break-in near Branson, Missouri over the past 24 hours, with the only casualty appearing to be so far an unidentified female. Amongst the cryptic details she noted authorities were looking for Abigail Spencer of Orchard Mills, Connecticut as a person of interest.

With a quizzical look forming on her face, Abi spun the laptop around on the island so Winn could read the screen properly. “What do you make of this?” she asked.

Winn read through the online page, slowly absorbing the details. “Hey, I know a guy. I honestly think it’s time to make Abi Spencer disappear.”

Clearing the granite countertop of the remnants of breakfast, Winn and Abi then took the remainder of their drinks into the great room and settled into a plush sectional to plan their next steps, unaware of the half dozen individuals silently ascending the building until a solid and insistent knock began to hammer against Winn’s door.
