I’d love to say wrapping Christmas gifts was a blast, but…not so much. Last Sunday, we put a couple of classic Christmas movies on the DVD player (“Christmas Vacation” and “A Christmas Carol” -George C. Scott version- this year), and I sat down on the floor in our entryway to wrap each gift (easy to spread out) before handing them over to the wife for her to “accessorize”. No fun at all!

What was the last thing I did for fun? Hmm, driving around the city looking at Christmas lights with my sister-in-law who was visiting last weekend. We had dinner beforehand at El Rodeo in Urbandale, where I tried Taco Salad Fajitas, which were amazing, and I would highly recommend! Once we got home, we just kicked back and visited for a few hours before calling it a night. It was fun and relaxing, and we simply don’t do that often enough.

The weekend before, we took our 3-year-old grandson to have breakfast with Santa at Raccoon River Park here in town. The combination of Santa Claus and pancakes was simply irresistible to the little guy (he calls Cracker Barrel “The Pancake Store”), and he can easily put away more pancakes in a sitting than I can, and that’s saying something!

Once the breakfast was done, we stood in line to meet the “big guy” (and no, I don’t mean Joe Biden), and his face lit up when it was his turn to tell Santa his Christmas wish. After being brave enough to tell Santa he wanted a boat, Santa, using an amazingly authentic Scandanavian accent, asked if he wanted a big boat or a little boat (little), and grandson was enthralled by the magical experience. As first-time grandparents, you can’t get much more fun than that.
