What technology would you be better off without, why?
Some mornings, I wake up and check my newsfeed as well as select social media to see what’s happening in the world.

As much as I love the convenience of being “in the know” 24/7, there are often times where I wish I lived in the simpler version of the world before the advent of the internet, apps, cell phones, and social media.
LIFE IN THE 70’S

Growing up in the Midwest during the 1970’s, we literally had three TV networks plus PBS to watch for entertainment (God help you if you and your siblings couldn’t agree on the same program), corded phones on the walls at home, social media that was simply jumping on our bike and running over to our friends’ houses to get the latest local news.
WHICH TECHNOLOGY CAN I DO WITHOUT?

In my opinion, today’s social media is a definite negative influence on our society, allowing conglomerates the opportunity to censure the very information we are wanting to share and/or be aware of, unfairly discriminating on portions of our population based upon the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution, providing a platform for unchecked hate speech to flood our consciousness at times, and (in the case of TikTok) putting our national security at risk.
“Oh, but it’s fun!”, you say.
How many times have you read or been involved in a vehement social media argument? Do you honestly believe that the “perfect life” your friends present on Facebook and Instagram actually represent their actual lives? Educational institutions are so focused on bullying, and yet we hear of cyber-bullying leading to devastating outcomes due to social media connections making it easier to plot and plan with evil intent.
Most commonplace and detrimental, social media is simply a consumer of time. We live in an era where time is sorely lacking for most of us, and yet we sit by and watch as future generations are hypnotized by apps designed to serve up constant advertising while also working overtime to keep users looking at their phones for hours at a stretch.
Yes, the one technology I could do without…is social media.
