In anticipation of Post 22 in the “Relentless” novel series later this week, I wanted to take a moment to remind you of what was happening recently in the thriller.
Installment 20 of our featured novel “Relentless” is (finally) here! If you’ve missed the earlier installments and would like to join our readership, be sure to check out the novel’s home page HERE.
We are publishing the novel in small installments, so it takes only minutes to keep up with the story. Many years ago, we were fans of Stephen King’s installment-based publishing of “The Green Mile” over many months, so we are following in that vein as a feature on Moteventure.

RELENTLESS – D.S. FACTOR
“Take your hands off me!”, Caroline yelled, yanking her arm from the man’s grasp. People nearby looked in their direction, but eventually looked away as if they had seen something that should illicit their response, but that they didn’t want to get involved with.
Like a vise, the man’s hand snapped immediately back in place, crunching her bicep and forcibly spinning her around to direct her back the way she’d come.
After navigating to Maxwell Thrasher’s office suite, the doors silently separated, and Caroline was ushered to a waiting chair across from Thrasher’s minimalist workspace and dropped unceremoniously into it.
“Well, well. Welcome back, Dr. Kramer.” Thrasher sneered as he activated his chair, wheeled it swiftly over to her, and produced a hypodermic that he then popped into her leg with an unexpected thrust, pressing the plunger all the way down.
Shocked and utterly furious, Caroline rose and turned to Thrasher, slapping him squarely across the face. “Who do you think you are exactly?” she spat out. Abruptly and unexpectedly, she felt an odd sense of vertigo, as if the room were spinning in place around her. Backing up on unsteady legs, she fell back into the chair and with what felt like tunnel vision, eventually closed her eyes, and then all went black.
Hazy rays of sunlight shone through skylights inset high on the walls of what appeared to be a medical exam room. Huge lights directly above her made Caroline feel as if she was in an operating suite and lying flat on her back on the table.
A constant beeping noise reverberated in the room and ambient conversations were taking place around her. Dazed, weak and unsteady, she engaged her core to lift herself up from the table but was promptly encouraged to lie back down by a young woman she presumed was a nurse or doctor.
“Hon, you’re gonna be alright, but we need you to relax and lie back a bit longer. The drug is still quite strong in your system, so we don’t want you to risk a fall or something worse.”
Clearing her throat and her mind, Caroline drew upon her innate sense of authority together with her general dislike of being patronized. “Who are you, what is this place, and why am I here – Hon?”
The woman looked a bit puzzled. “Why, you’re at MA1 downtown. My name is Dr. Mangeiri. Thankfully we were able to stabilize you. Dr. Lawter will be in shortly to go over the results of your tests and advise on next steps.”
Now it was Caroline’s turn to be confused. “Test results? What test results?”
“We performed several standard tests to rule out any long-term effects right after we stabilized you.”
“Stabilized me? Stabilized me from what?”
Looking like a mother that must reprimand her child due to lying about something rather obvious, Dr. Mangieri exhaled with a nearly imperceivable eyeroll, looked directly at Caroline and said, “I’m pretty sure you know.”
Exasperated at this point, Caroline had had it. “All I remember was being with Max Thrasher one minute, waking up and finding myself here. What is it you’re not telling me? What happened?”
“Fortunately for you, paramedics were able to administer Narcan in time to reverse most of the effects of the opioids you ingested.” replied a man from across the room. Tall, with broad shoulders, dark complexion and a friendly open face, Dr. Luke Lawter sauntered over in scrubs and leaned in close to Caroline.
“They literally lost you twice to coding on our way to the hospital, but from listening to you with Dr. Mangieri here the past few minutes, it’s clear to me you have a natural fighting spirit.”
Glancing upwards at the IV snaking near her bedside, it was then that Caroline realized her hands were bound to the bedside with padded restraints, loosely attached. Jangling them loudly as she attempted to pull the IV needle from her vein, she was dumbfounded.
“Why am I restrained like this? This is insane!” she nearly bellowed.
Dr. Lawter patted her forearm and encouraged her to calm down, his unintentional patronizing obviously not the best way to calm his patient.
“It’s simply standard procedure following a suicide attempt.”

WHAT POSITIVE EMOTION DO YOU FEEL MOST OFTEN?
More than likely, you can see from much of my blog posting that for me the glass is usually half full. I have a healthy optimism when it comes to the world and the future. So, I’d say optimism, hope, and faith are the strongest positive emotions I feel on a daily basis. Those and love of course.
