MOTEVENTURE REACTIONS: WISH YOU WERE HERE – PINK FLOYD

As is true with most of the larger-than-life rock bands formed in the 60’s and catapulted to stardom during the 70’s, Pink Floyd is a group I was aware of but not one I listened to. That is, until 1979 with the release of “Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)” from the album “The Wall”, a release that spent 15 weeks atop the Billboard album chart.

Later I could recall seeing the cover of “Dark Side of the Moon” on t-shirts, notebooks, the general media and reading about how the album remained on the charts for a record-breaking number of weeks.

That limited awareness led me to contemplate which Pink Floyd track to cover on my latest reaction video. The question was finding a song that I’d never heard but my audience would appreciate. Looking on their list of singles and their respective peak positions, I found the title track to their 1975 album “Wish You Were Here”, and knew I’d never heard it.

As a side note, there are a few items I need to correct and/or amend that I note in the video but learned otherwise after recording it (thank you to my Pink Floyd superfans!):

  • When I mention “Coda” in the video, I am actually meaning “The Final Cut”…but had Led Zeppelin in my head apparently at that moment.
  • “THIS SONG IS NOT about Syd Barrett. Roger Waters explains it himself in an interview saying he wasn’t even thinking of Syd when he wrote it. Shine On You Crazy Diamond was written while thinking of Syd after an odd-looking man wandered into the studio. Syd now weighed 300 plus pounds, had shaved his head as well as all his facial hair including his eyebrows. That this song is about Syd is just people’s need to connect emotional dots that aren’t real because, in their mind, it adds an extra layer of poignancy to the song.” Thank you Iguanadon for setting me straight on this point!
