Having been born in the early 40’s, my father-in-law is a huge fan of doo-wop music, those old classics defined by tight harmonies and oftentimes non-sensical lyrics. I recall photos of him from the day with an improvised Elvis pompadour while wearing a leather jacket.

Flash forward to today and one of the most common topics we’ve bonded over the years to has been music. Numerous times exist in my memory where we’ll be hanging out together and he’ll be browsing channels on the tv or on YouTube and he’ll stumble on a song from that bygone era.

Him: “Do you remember this one by Wanda Jackson?”

Me: “Not sure I remember ‘Let’s Have a Party’. I know ‘Party All the Time’ though!”

Usually now, I just simply say “Before my time”, and then he proceeds to educate me on the day music died.

Him: “The day music died was the day the Beatles landed on American soil.”

Me: “To me, it was the day no one could perform without having someone ‘featured’ on the song with them.”

When it comes to Aretha Franklin tracks “before my time”, I’m familiar with “Respect”, “Think”, and “Chain of Fools”. When I think of the Queen of Soul, the tracks I’m most into are “Freeway of Love”, “Who’s Zoomin’ Who” and “I Knew You Were Waiting” (with George Michael).

So, with those facts in mind, I began to track down a popular Aretha Franklin song that I’d never heard before, landing on a song called “Rock Steady” from her 1971 album “Young, Gifted and Black” (her eighteenth).

Peaking at #9 on Billboard’s Hot 100, the single influenced covers by Daryl Hall and John Oates (2004), Sweet Salvation (1972), Patti Austin (1994) and Prince (2007).
