In researching this 1970 track from English band Led Zeppelin, I approached it from the perspective of a listener who is only vaguely familiar with the group via their 1979 final release “In Through the Out Door”, featuring the single “Fool in the Rain” as well as “All My Love”. At the time, critics seemed to be divided on the sound of the group’s final album release (final due to their drummer John Bonham dying in September of 1980).
Honestly, I was pretty unaware of the group’s trajectory as one of the most influential bands in the history of rock music, with the exception of the megahit “Stairway to Heaven”, which was hard to ignore even in the years following its 1971 release.
How did I land on “Immigrant Song” for my next reaction? Because of the group’s timeframe of their biggest albums and their reputation still to this day, I selected Led Zeppelin as the artist to react to, and then did some internet research of their most respected hits and landed on this lead single from “Led Zeppelin III”. Who wouldn’t appreciate a song inspired by Norse mythology?
