You can picture this, I’m sure you can. You’re driving with your family to a city a few hours away late on a Friday afternoon. You know Sunday is Father’s Day, so you’re looking forward to seeing Dad, as it’s been a month or so and you’ve both been looking forward to it.
The interstate is packed of course, and as semis and cars speed by your vehicle, subconsciously you think about how all of those people have their own lives that are entwined with other people that you’ve never met and most likely never will.
In those situations, I often wonder what’s happening in their lives today. Is someone battling a life-threatening illness? Are they on the way to a huge birthday/pool party? Are there illicit drugs or something worse in their trunk? Are they enroute to a great summer vacation spot?
Major things happen every day in our lives without our being able to label them as “notable”, as much as those glossy updates on Facebook and Instagram may want us to believe.
Today, we’re highlighting some of the truly notable things that have happened today, as well as this date in the past.
- Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman is space on June 16, 1963
- Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” opened in New York City on June 16, 1960

- An El Greco sketch, “The Immaculate Conception”, stolen in Spain 35 years earlier, is recovered in New York City by the FBI on June 16, 1971

- FDR’s “New Deal” is passed by the House of Representatives on June 16, 1935
- Tupac Shakur was born on June 16, 1971
- Grease first became the word when it opened in theatres on June 16, 1978
