Daily writing prompt
What TV shows did you watch as a kid?

DEFINING “KID”

For the purposes of today’s post, I’m going to assume kid means “minor”, under the age of eighteen. There is a big difference between programs for adolescents, teens, and young adults, so I’ll split my response today into those three categories.

0 – 10 YEARS OLD

As a young child, most of my favorite shows were cartoons, as you might expect. I did publish a post earlier this year detailing the cartoons I loved back in the day, so I’ll ask you to click the link below for the details!

The weekdays were usually filled with either school, playing with my siblings and the kids in the neighborhood until the streetlights came on (kick the can, red light/green light and hide and seek), or a few shows here and there.

My childhood best friend Todd and I went through a phase where we were obsessed with the daytime soap opera “Dark Shadows” that if memory serves me correct came on right as we returned from school each day. Before “Twilight” and Edward Cullen, we had Barnabus Collins, and he was the campiest yet terrifying thing on afternoon tv in those days!

THE TEEN YEARS

There were shows that were sort of a transition between childhood and my true teen years. What kid/teen in the 70’s didn’t watch 60’s/70’s reruns of “The Brady Bunch”, “Gilligan’s Island”, “The Partridge Family”, “The Munsters”, “The Addams Family”, “Bewitched”, “The Beverly Hillbillies”, “I Dream of Jeanie” and the like?

Later in that decade, I would discover “classics” like “Charlies Angels”, “Happy Days”, “Laverne & Shirley”, “Three’s Company”, “The Six Million Dollar Man”, “The Bionic Woman”, “Welcome Back, Kotter”, and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” just to name a few.

Oddly enough, I find I published a post that combines many of those favorite shows from my teen years into one intriguing piece of writing (haha). I’ve linked it below if you’d like to check it out now:

THE YOUNG ADULT YEARS

In addition to my discovery of the Minnesota Vikings and Baltimore Colts, I also became enamored with the nighttime soaps “Dallas”, “Dynasty”, “Knots Landing”, as well as “That’s Incredible”, “Magnum, P.I.”, “Family Ties”, “The Incredible Hulk”, “The Dukes of Hazzard”, and “Mork & Mindy” in my late teens.

I’d hardly call my taste in entertainment at that time sophisticated, but I nonetheless got sucked into each and every premise, voluntarily. The hardest part was competing for the remote with my numerous older siblings!

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN

I’ve delved into some classic TV shows from childhood to young adulthood, stirring up nostalgic feelings and memories. Now it’s your turn to share your favorite TV shows and series from that time! Head over to the comments section and let us know which shows had a special place in your heart. Can’t wait to hear from you all!
