Most weekends, we’re like professional errand-runners, restaurant critics, blockbuster enthusiasts, mountain conquerors, gym aficionados, 3-year-old entertainers, and family event organizers, among other impressive titles. We should really get business cards for all these side hustles!

It’s like I punch out on Friday, blink, and bam – Monday is already in full swing! It’s as if my weekends are on stealth mode. But hey, props to coffee for swooping in on those Monday mornings after a “wild and crazy” Saturday & Sunday combo, to channel a bit of a Steve Martin/Dan Ackroyd vibe.

Ah, but this weekend is different.

We both agreed that we would do absolutely nothing and simply recharge our batteries. Take time to kick back and relax. If I had a hammock attached between trees in my backyard, that’s where you’d have found me this weekend.

So, what does “doing nothing” actually look like? Although we had the best of intentions, whether out of necessity or simply boredom, we did do something.

A CORGI DAD NEVER TAKES A VACATION DAY

Early Saturday morning, I woke up to a gentle and persistent sound coming from beside my bed. It was our Corgi Scamp, delicately trying to rouse me with his considerate efforts. Grabbing the leash by the back door, we took a quick stroll down our cul-de-sac, Scamp investigating every few feet as is his custom.

LIFE’S BEEN BERRY, BERRY GOOD…TO ME

Having returned to our yard, I wandered back to the garden to check on the status of the plants, noticing the raspberries had quick a few berries ripe for the picking. Grabbing a gallon ice-cream bucket from a shelf on our deck, I spent a half hour or so filling it while working in the shade of the earlier morning. The two of us entered the kitchen and I filled the bucket with water and left them in the sink. My better half did the preparation for freezing for later (as we have tons of berries this time of year).

LIFE IN THE GRASS LANE

Right now as I type this, I am celebrating about 14,000 steps on my Fitbit, all on the Sunday of my “do-nothing” weekend. So, what could be better than all those steps when I’m supposed to be relaxing and doing nothing this weekend? You should really see my front and backyard right now, perfectly mowed at an angle to look extra awesome. I popped my Airpods into my ears and tuned into a Spotify playlist of the best hits from 1979. I was instantly transported back to my sophomore year in high school. It was a welcome blast from the past, revisiting the hits from the likes of Blondie, Donna Summer, AC/DC, Chic, Village People, BeeGees and The Knack!

DINNER AND A MOVIE

After spending several hours working in the yard, tackling tasks like mowing, weeding, building an animal trap, assembling a weed torch, and cleaning up tiny apples, we decided to treat ourselves to some delicious Mexican food – fajita quesadillas – and unwind with a movie for the rest of the night.

Despite aiming for a relaxing weekend, it turned out that we were quite productive after all. Overall, I’d say we’re not too good for nothing.
