Daily writing prompt
What are three objects you couldn’t live without?

Rather than skewing to the sentimental, obvious options (wedding ring, photos, pet, etc.), I feel like it would be more interesting to readers if I instead veer into the selfish, frivolous things that I can’t live without. What say you? Here are the first three things that come to mind when I think about things I can’t live without.

SMART PHONE

This option would most likely show up on a lot of people’s list of what they couldn’t live without. Realizing I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s before technology swamped our everyday life, I know I could absolutely live without it, but why would I want to?

My phone is a bit of a cheat in that it is a portal to music, sports, news, books, television and more. A few years back I remember an album release from Marie Osmond of all people. It was called “Music is Medicine”, and although I confess, I’ve never listened to the song, the title immediately connected with me, as I totally agree with that assertion.

For me, music can be fun, soothing, depressing, inspiring, comforting and energizing. I initially thought I’d list just music, but then realized I also need to nurture my mind with books, excite my soul with sports, entertain myself with tv and movies and connect with other people as a human being. Nothing fulfills those parts of life quite like the smart phone.

HOME

“If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own back yard. Because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with! Is that right?”

In my book, there truly is no place quite like home. Being able to completely unplug, be yourself and enjoy your family, friends, pets, and the comforts that surround you are a blessing to be treasured. Whether home is an apartment, a condo, a house, or takes some other form, I don’t think I could live without the stability, comfort, convenience and just the pleasure of kicking back and enjoying my life.

VEHICLE

You know the feeling when you have to take your car into the repair shop and realize there are two of you, but only one car between you? Sure, there are friends, neighbors or family that can drop you here or there (as well as your second car), there’s the metro bus system in a pinch…or Uber. But really, it’s just part of our culture to be able to hop in the car and run errands, experience a leisurely road trip, visit family in another city, or just take a drive for the hell of it…. without it being in a covered wagon.

My list is likely not anything everyone else would include on their three things they couldn’t live without, but I’ll ask you anyway. What NOT on my list would be on yours? Share it with a comment!
