On the twelfth day of highlighting lesser known Christmas songs (or versions of classics I gravitate to each year), my choice of song is one I’ve never really been too fond of – “Little Drummer Boy”. In 2019 however, Australian band for KING & COUNTRY released “CHRISTMAS | Live from Phoenix”, and from the first seconds of the driving beat of the drum on that opening cut, I was hooked. In 2020, they released a studio version of LDB on their collection “A Drummer Boy Christmas”. I still like the live version better to be honest.
Joel & Luke Smallbone are the younger brothers of Rebecca St. James, a staple on Christian radio for the past several decades. Their sound is most often compared to an Australian Coldplay or U2.
Initially simply dubbed Joel & Luke and later Austoville, the brothers settled on for KING & COUNTRY shortly before the release of their debut release, “Crave” in 2012. Successful singles include “Proof of Your Love”, “Shoulders”, “Busted Heart (Hold on to Me)”, “It’s Not Over Yet”, “Together” and most recently “God Only Knows” (with Dolly Parton).
for KING & COUNTRY are 4-time Grammy winners, 7-time Dove Award winners, and have also won one Billboard Music award. Their latest non-holiday release was 2018’s “Burn the Ships”.
